The Graphic Art/Photography Department fosters the development of an individual visual language through the interplay of analog and digital graphics, photography, and their diverse extensions. Experimental openness shapes the work: text, image, film, and object can merge in installations, projections, montages, or digital spaces, pushing the boundaries of the media. Students’ own artistic projects form the core of the program.
Through the interplay of practical implementation and conceptual reflection, students sharpen their artistic position and engage with current artistic trends. International exchange programs, interdisciplinary courses, and dialogue with diverse cultural contexts broaden perspectives and strengthen individual artistic approaches.
HFBK Hamburg’s workshops and interdisciplinary structures enable a wide range of technical and creative experiments—from reproduction and print techniques to digital graphics and photography. Academic courses provide theoretical and historical foundations, deepening the understanding of image production and its social positioning. Exhibitions and collaborations offer opportunities to present and discuss artistic work.
