Karl Schmidt-Rottluff Scholarship
The Karl Schmidt-Rottluff Scholarship is a postgraduate scholarship awarded by the German National Academic Foundation for outstanding artistic achievements. Every two years, three to five visual artists who work exclusively or predominantly on a freelance basis receive a monthly scholarship of EUR 1,200 for a period of up to two years. At the end of the funding period, there is a joint group exhibition of the last two years’ work at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and a catalog production. You must be nominated for the Karl Schmidt-Rottluff Scholarship. It is not possible to apply yourself. State-recognized art colleges in Germany are eligible to make nominations.
Requirements
Applicants must be German citizens (or have a German education), citizens of an EU country/EU accession country, or non-EU foreigners with a permanent residence permit (case-by-case assessment).
Applicants must have completed most of their studies in Germany and have their main place of residence in Germany.
Studies must be completed by the start of the scholarship at the latest (including master craftsman studies and postgraduate courses/PhD).
The last degree must not have been completed more than five years ago. However, a degree in art is not a prerequisite for admission to the selection process.
The maximum age should not exceed 35 years at the time of nomination, if possible – individual cases may be considered.
Artists who work exclusively in the field of applied arts/music cannot be nominated.
Application for nomination
The scholarship is awarded every two years. The current recipients were selected in September 2022. The next nomination phase will begin in spring 2026. Graduates of the HFBK Hamburg who are interested in applying for the Karl Schmidt-Rottluff Scholarship and who meet the above formal requirements should apply using an online form and then submit their digital portfolio via a cloud link.
