Health Insurance
Brief overview
In general
Students at state-run or state-recognized German universities are required to have valid health insurance during their period of study.
For first-year students
You must contact a statutory health insurance company as soon as possible after receiving your letter of admission and either take out student insurance there or have yourself exempted so that your insurance status is reported to the HFBK Hamburg (for the notification of the insurance status to the HFBK Hamburg, the health insurance companies may need the sender number of the HFBK Hamburg: H0003259).
If you do not notify the HFBK Hamburg of your insurance status, you cannot be enrolled and will not receive any semester documents.
For enrolled students
Please note that the statutory health insurance companies use the electronic notification procedure to inform the HFBK Hamburg if you have not fulfilled your obligations to the health insurance company (e.g. outstanding contribution payments) and therefore do not have valid health insurance coverage. If you do not take care of the matter immediately, not having health insurance coverage can lead to exmatriculation.
